Gunpei Yokoi's calculator-parts handhelds, and the start of Nintendo as a games company: a single LCD with a fixed printed image, one game, and a battery life measured in months. Sold forty million. The clamshell models introduced the two-screen layout that became the DS twenty years later, and the D-pad was invented here.
