The best-selling computer model ever made, by a margin nobody has approached. The reason is two chips: the VIC-II, with hardware sprites and smooth scrolling, and the SID, a real analogue synthesiser that gave games music people still listen to. Commodore's own chip fabs let them price it at will and starve the competition. Breadbin and later boards differ; the SID revisions sound different, and collectors care which is fitted.
